How Much Do Skylight Shades Cost? image

Skylight shades are a specialized window treatment designed to control sunlight, reduce heat, and improve comfort in rooms with overhead windows. Because skylights are different from standard windows, the cost of skylight shades can vary based on size, operation, and customization.

If you are budgeting for skylight window coverings, it helps to understand what factors influence price and why skylight shades are often more expensive than standard shades.

Browse our full range of window shade options, including our skylight window shades for more information on styles, features, and buying considerations.

Average Cost of Skylight Shades

Skylight shades typically cost more than standard window shades because they are often custom-sized and may require specialized operation systems. Pricing can vary widely depending on the size of the skylight, the type of shade, and whether the shade is manually operated or motorized.

In general, skylight shades are usually considered a mid-to-high investment because of their custom fit and function.

What Affects the Cost of Skylight Shades?

Skylight Size

Larger skylights require more material and often more specialized construction, which increases the cost. Unusually shaped or oversized skylights may also require custom fabrication.

Type of Shade Material

Different shade materials can affect pricing. Light-filtering fabrics, blackout materials, and energy-efficient fabrics may have different price points depending on performance and design.

Manual vs Motorized Operation

Motorized skylight shades typically cost more than manually operated versions. However, motorization is often a valuable upgrade for skylights that are difficult to reach.

Customization and Upgrades

Custom colors, specialty fabrics, remote controls, smart-home compatibility, and upgraded hardware can all increase the final price.

Installation Complexity

Installation costs may also vary depending on the location of the skylight, ceiling height, and whether professional installation is needed.

Why Skylight Shades Cost More Than Standard Shades

Skylight shades are designed for overhead windows, which means they often require special tension systems, custom sizing, or motorized controls to function properly. These additional requirements can make them more expensive than shades used on standard vertical windows.

Their cost reflects both the specialized design and the performance benefits they provide in managing light and heat from above.

Are Motorized Skylight Shades Worth the Extra Cost?

For many homeowners, motorized skylight shades are worth the additional cost because they make overhead windows much easier to manage. This is especially true for skylights that are high up, hard to reach, or used frequently throughout the day.
