What Does Made in USA Mean?

In general, Made in USA refers to products that are manufactured or assembled in the United States. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides guidance regarding Made in USA claims and how companies can market products based on manufacturing origin.

Depending on the product, materials, components, fabrics, hardware, and assembly processes may come from different locations, even if the final manufacturing or assembly occurs domestically.

Types of Made in USA Claims

Unqualified Made in USA Claims

An unqualified Made in USA claim generally means that all or virtually all of the product is made in the United States.

This type of claim is subject to FTC guidance and standards regarding domestic manufacturing and sourcing.

Qualified Made in USA Claims

A qualified Made in USA claim provides additional context about the product’s manufacturing process or sourcing.

Examples may include:

  • Made in USA with imported components

  • Assembled in USA

  • Manufactured in USA using domestic and imported materials

How This Applies to Window Treatments

Window treatments are often made using multiple components, including fabrics, lift systems, brackets, headrails, motors, and hardware. Some products may be fully manufactured domestically, while others may combine imported materials with domestic assembly or customization.

Because custom blinds and shades are frequently built to order, many American made window treatments involve domestic cutting, fabrication, assembly, and quality control.

Made in USA vs Assembled in USA

Claim Type General Meaning
Made in USA Product is substantially manufactured domestically
Assembled in USA Product is assembled domestically using some imported components
Made in USA with Imported Components Domestic manufacturing includes imported materials or parts

Why Homeowners Choose Made in USA Window Treatments

1. Custom Manufacturing

Many American made blinds and shades are custom built to fit specific window sizes and design preferences.

2. Domestic Quality Control

Domestic production may provide more direct oversight during manufacturing, assembly, and inspection.

3. Faster Communication and Support

American manufacturing can help simplify customer service, replacement parts, warranty support, and order communication.

4. Support for U.S. Manufacturing

Many homeowners prefer supporting American workers and domestic manufacturing businesses.

Can Imported Components Still Be Used?

Yes. Many products marketed as American made may still contain imported fabrics, hardware, motors, or components depending on the manufacturer and product category.

This is one reason why qualified Made in USA claims are commonly used in the window treatment industry.

How to Verify Made in USA Claims

  • Review product descriptions carefully

  • Look for qualified vs unqualified claims

  • Ask where manufacturing and assembly occur

  • Check for detailed sourcing information

  • Review manufacturer documentation when available

Made in USA vs BABA Compliance

Made in USA claims are different from Build America, Buy America (BABA) compliance requirements used in certain federally funded projects.

Final Thoughts
