Are Zebra Shades Blackout? What You Need to Know image

Zebra shades are a popular window treatment because they combine the functionality of a shade with the versatility of horizontal light control. However, one of the most common questions homeowners ask is whether zebra shades are truly blackout.

The short answer is that not all zebra shades are blackout. Whether a zebra shade provides blackout performance depends on the fabric selected. Shop our selection of dual layered zebra window shades.

What Are Zebra Shades?

Zebra shades feature alternating bands of sheer and solid fabric. By adjusting the position of the bands, homeowners can control privacy, natural light, and outside visibility.

When the solid bands align, the shade provides greater privacy and light control. When the sheer bands align, more natural light enters the room while maintaining a soft view to the outside. Learn more about what dual-layered zebra shades are.

Are All Zebra Shades Blackout?

No. Most zebra shade collections offer multiple fabric options, including light filtering, room darkening, and blackout fabrics. The level of light control depends on the specific fabric selected when ordering.

If blackout performance is important, you must choose a fabric specifically identified as a blackout fabric. Selecting a standard light filtering or room darkening fabric will not provide the same level of darkness. Shop all of our blackout window shades.

The Importance of Choosing a Blackout Zebra Shade Fabric

Many homeowners assume all zebra shades provide blackout performance because of the alternating fabric bands. However, the fabric itself determines how much light passes through the shade.

For maximum light blockage, select a zebra shade collection that offers blackout fabric options. These fabrics are designed to significantly reduce incoming light while maintaining the unique appearance and functionality of zebra shades.

Do Blackout Zebra Shades Create Complete Darkness?

While blackout zebra shade fabrics block significantly more light than light filtering fabrics, small amounts of light may still enter around the edges of the shade depending on the mounting style and window configuration.

Inside mount zebra shades typically require small operating clearances between the shade and the window frame. These clearances can allow some light to enter around the sides.

For homeowners seeking maximum darkness, outside mount installation may help reduce side light gaps.

Blackout Zebra Shades vs Traditional Blackout Shades

Traditional blackout roller shades use a continuous sheet of blackout fabric. Zebra shades provide a more decorative appearance and adjustable light control while still offering blackout fabric options.

Homeowners often choose blackout zebra shades when they want both modern styling and enhanced light control. Compare Zebra Shades to Cellular Shades or Zebra Shades vs Dual Roller Shades.

Choosing the Right Zebra Shade Fabric

If your goal is maximum darkness, be sure to select a blackout zebra shade fabric during the ordering process. Light filtering fabrics and room darkening fabrics may look similar but provide very different levels of light control.

Carefully review the fabric descriptions and specifications to ensure you are choosing a true blackout option that matches your needs.

Final Thoughts

Zebra shades can be blackout, but only when you select a blackout fabric option. Not all zebra shades provide the same level of light control, and many collections include both light filtering and blackout fabrics.

If privacy, sleep quality, glare reduction, or room darkening are important, choosing a blackout zebra shade fabric can provide significantly better performance than standard light filtering alternatives.
