Video Description
Follow this quick video to install top-down/bottom-up (TDBU) cellular shades like a pro. We’ll cover bracket placement, headrail snap-in, handle alignment, and first-time operation so your top-moving rail meets cleanly under the headrail and the bottom rail lifts smoothly. Use this page as your step-by-step checklist while you watch.
What you’ll need: tape measure, pencil, level, step stool, drill/driver with 1/8" (3 mm) bit, Phillips screwdriver, and wall anchors if you’re not mounting into studs. For larger shades, a second pair of hands helps keep the headrail level during snap-in.
What’s in the Box (Typical)
- Headrail with integrated brackets/clips or separate mounting brackets
- Movable mid-rail (top-down rail) and bottom rail (+ handles)
- Mounting screws; center support for wider shades
Before You Start
- Confirm inside vs outside mount and verify clearance/depth or overlap.
- Dry-fit the headrail to check for obstructions (locks, tiles, trim).
- For TDBU, handles should sit near the center of the mid-rail and bottom rail for even travel.
Inside Mount — Step-by-Step
- Mark bracket positions: Hold the headrail in the opening; mark left/right brackets flush and level. Add a center support on wide shades.
- Pre-drill & install: Use a 1/8" bit. Fasten brackets square to the frame so the headrail seats on a single plane.
- Snap in the headrail: Hook the back edge, rotate up, and press until every bracket clicks. Run a finger along the rail to confirm full engagement.
- Attach handles: Clip handles at the center of the mid-rail and bottom rail.
- Test travel: Raise the bottom rail fully; then raise the mid-rail fully (top-down). Cycle both rails 2–3 times to equalize tension.
Outside Mount — Step-by-Step
- Plan overlap: Add 1–2" (25–50 mm) per side; add extra height for the headrail/cassette.
- Strike a level line: Use a level to mark the top bracket line across the wall/trim.
- Mount brackets: Pre-drill; use anchors if no studs. Confirm bracket faces are co-planar.
- Seat the headrail: Hook, rotate, and snap fully into all brackets. Add valance/cassette components if provided.
- Attach handles & test: Center the handles; cycle both rails.
Leveling & Light Control Tips
- Level first: A tilted headrail shows as a light line where the mid-rail meets the headrail. Shim a low bracket if needed.
- Darkest results: Consider an outside mount or side channels to reduce edge light, especially with blackout fabrics.
- Meet point: Align limits so the mid-rail parks snugly beneath the headrail without rubbing.
Troubleshooting
- Gap at top: Re-seat headrail, verify level; (motorized) nudge upper limit for the mid-rail.
- Uneven lift: Move rails from center; cycle fully to balance tension. Check that all brackets are fully latched.
