Video Description
This guide shows the correct way to install shades that use a metal swing-arm installation bracket. The process is simple: mount the bracket, insert the headrail’s top channel onto the bracket’s fixed front edge, then swing the metal arm closed until it locks the headrail in place. These steps apply to Day/Night (two-fabric) cellular, Top-Down/Bottom-Up (TDBU) cellular, cordless cellular, and cordless Roman shades.
What’s in the Box (Typical)
- Headrail (with fabric/mid-rail if applicable)
- Metal swing-arm brackets (left/right + center support for wide shades)
- Mounting screws; optional valance/cassette end caps
- Handles (center rail & bottom rail on TDBU/Day-Night)
Tools You’ll Need
- Tape measure, pencil, level, step stool
- Drill/driver with 1/8" (3 mm) bit, Phillips screwdriver
- Wall anchors (if not fastening into studs)
Bracket Orientation
- Front edge (fixed lip): This thin edge catches the top channel of the headrail first.
- Metal swing arm: Starts open for install; swings closed to clamp/lock the headrail.
- Keep all bracket faces co-planar and level so the arm closes smoothly on every bracket.
Inside Mount — Step-by-Step
- Mark locations: Hold the headrail in the opening to mark bracket positions. Be sure to position the brackets so they do not interfere with the lift mechanisms inside the headrail.
- Install brackets (arms open): Fasten left/right (and center support if provided). Verify all bracket faces align on the same plane.
- Hook the headrail: Tilt the headrail slightly toward the room and insert the headrail’s top channel onto the bracket’s fixed front edge along the length.
- Swing the arms closed: One bracket at a time, rotate the metal arm up and back until it clicks/locks beneath the headrail. Run your fingers along the rail to confirm every arm is fully closed.
- Finish up: Attach handles (center & bottom rails where applicable) and snap on end caps/valance if included.
Outside Mount — Step-by-Step
- Plan overlap: Typically 1–2" (25–50 mm) per side; more for blackout.
- Strike a level line: Mark the top bracket line on wall/trim.
- Mount brackets (arms open): Use anchors where studs aren’t available.
- Hook & lock: Engage the headrail’s top channel on the front edge, then swing each metal arm closed to lock the shade.
Notes by Shade Type
Day/Night Cellular (Light-Filtering + Blackout)
- Before lifting the headrail, make sure both fabrics are raised (lighter, easier handling).
- After locking, cycle fully and re-meet fabrics; a minimal clearance line is normal.
Top-Down/Bottom-Up (TDBU) Cellular
- Set the mid-rail and bottom rail at the top for compact handling.
- Center both handles; after locking, run 2–3 full cycles to equalize spring tension.
Cordless Cellular (Bottom-Up)
- Raise to complete height before install; after locking, operate from the center with two hands for level travel.
Cordless Roman Shades
- Raise to mid-height so the stack is neat. Remove the fabric at the top by separating the Velcro for easier headrail access. This helps prevent the fabric from catching on the bracket as you hook the headrail.
Removal / Service
- Support the headrail with one hand.
- Open each bracket’s metal arm (release tab, then swing open).
- Lift the headrail off the bracket’s front edge and pull away.
Leveling & Pro Tips
- If an arm won’t close: The headrail may not be fully seated on the front edge, or a bracket is a bit high/low. Re-seat the headrail and confirm brackets are level and co-planar.
- Click check: You should feel/hear each arm engage. Press along the rail to verify every bracket is locked.
- Dark-room setup: For maximum darkness, prefer an outside mount and ensure limits let rails meet snugly (TDBU/Day-Night).
Troubleshooting
- Shade looks tilted: One bracket face is proud/recessed. Loosen, shim, and re-tighten so all faces align.
- Rattle at the headrail: A swing arm may be partially closed. Re-close until fully latched; snug bracket screws.
- Fabric rubs trim: Shift bracket position slightly or increase outside-mount overlap.
