Blackout Shades vs Curtains image

Blackout shades and blackout curtains are both popular options for reducing outside light, improving privacy, and creating darker rooms. While they serve similar purposes, they differ in appearance, functionality, insulation, maintenance, and overall light control.

Choosing between blackout shades and curtains depends on your room, design preferences, privacy needs, and how much light blockage you want.

Browse our collection of blackout and room darkening shades or compare additional light-control options in our guide to light filtering vs room darkening vs blackout shades.

What Are Blackout Shades?

Blackout shades are window shades designed with blackout materials that block most incoming light through the fabric. They are commonly available in roller shades, cellular shades, Roman shades, and other window covering styles.

Blackout shades are often selected for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms, and windows with strong direct sunlight.

What Are Blackout Curtains?

Blackout curtains are fabric curtain panels made with thick materials or blackout liners designed to reduce incoming light and improve privacy.

Curtains are commonly used in bedrooms, living rooms, and decorative spaces where softer styling and layered window treatments are desired.

Benefits of Blackout Shades

1. Cleaner and More Modern Appearance

Blackout shades typically provide a more streamlined and minimal appearance compared to curtains.

2. Better Fit for Custom Windows

Shades are often custom sized to fit windows more precisely, which can improve light control and aesthetics.

3. Easier Maintenance

Many blackout shades are easier to dust and clean compared to heavy fabric curtains.

4. Available with Motorization

Motorized blackout shades are widely available for convenience and smart-home integration.

Benefits of Blackout Curtains

1. Softer Decorative Style

Curtains can add texture, warmth, and decorative layering to a room.

2. Flexible Layering

Curtains can easily be layered with sheers or additional window treatments for added softness and versatility.

3. Potential Draft Reduction

Thick blackout curtains may help reduce drafts around windows when properly installed.

Which Blocks More Light?

Both blackout shades and blackout curtains can provide excellent light control, but the effectiveness depends on the installation, fabric, and window coverage.

Outside mount blackout shades and curtains that extend beyond the window frame can help reduce light gaps around the edges.

Light Gaps with Blackout Shades

Blackout shades are designed to block light through the shade material, but small light gaps can still appear along the sides where the shade meets the window frame. This is most common with inside mount shades because a small deduction is needed so the shade can operate properly inside the window opening.

Drapery panels can help reduce this issue because they extend beyond the window frame and cover the side gaps more completely. For the best results, many homeowners layer blackout shades with drapery panels to combine strong light control with fuller window coverage.

If you want maximum darkness, another option is to choose total blackout shades with side tracks, which are designed to help block more light along the sides of the window.

Which Is Better for Bedrooms?

Blackout shades are often preferred in bedrooms because of their clean appearance, custom fit, and strong light control. Blackout curtains are popular for homeowners who prefer softer decorative styling.

Many homeowners also combine blackout shades with decorative curtain panels for layered functionality and design.

Which Is Better for Energy Efficiency?

Both blackout shades and curtains may help reduce heat gain and improve comfort depending on the material and installation.

Cellular blackout shades are especially popular for insulation and energy efficiency.

Blackout Shades vs Room Darkening Shades

Some homeowners may not need full blackout performance. Room darkening shades reduce incoming light while still allowing some filtered light into the room.
